D-dimer Test

D-dimer test is done to measure the d-dimer level in the blood. D-dimer substance occurs when a blood clot is degraded. D-dimer test is done with other coagulation tests  in blood clotting problems. D-dimer test  provides information about blood clotting and clot degradation mechanism inside the vessels. If a bleeding occurs, body makes a plug on the vessel wall to prevent blood loss. After the damaged part repaired clot must be removed. With the help of some excreted substances clot will be degraded. Some protein formed components  are released during this clot degradation process, these protein formed components are called d-dimer. Determining the amount of these proteins helps for diagnosis and treatment of some diseases.

How the D-dimer test is performed ?

You need to give a tube of blood for D-dimer test. You may feel a little pain for a few seconds during the blood collection process. D-dimer test is done in plasma part of the blood.

Factors that may affect your D-dimer test test resultsd dimer

  • Older age: D-dimer level is higher in older people
  • Rheumatoid arthritis: Rheumatoid factor (RF) may cause wrong positive results
  • High triglycerides level
  • Lipemia
  • Jaundice
  • Hemolysis

Purpose of D-dimer test

D-dimer test is done for the clotting problems listed above; which have some  various symptoms

Deep vein thrombosis

Clots  are seen in usually in the veins of legs, inguinal and arms. These symptoms may be found in one of the legs;

    • Tenderness in legs
    • Leg pain
    • Leg swelling
    • Different colors in legs, leg redness

    Pulmonary Embolism (PE)

    Blood flow suddenly stops because of an blockage in an artery of lungs. A clot, tumor, fat, etc. This is a serious and deadly problem. Symptoms may be like,

    • Shortness of breath suddenly
    • Rapid heart rate
    • Rapid breathing
    • Coughing
    • Bloody, foamy mucus with coughing
    • Sharp chest pain
    • Fainting

    Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC)

    So many blood clots occurs inside the vessel, abnormal blood clotting cause bleeding and some other symptoms like;

    • Hemorrhage
    • Bleeding gums
    • Nausea
    • Vomiting
    • Muscle pain
    • Abdominal pain
    • Seizures
    • Decreasing in urine output

    D-dimer test normal results

    These values may change according to the laboratory, test method and the analyser

    A normal D-dimer test result means it is negative.

    D-dimer test normal value: less than 250 mcg/L

    Evaluation of D-dimer test results

    Negative or normal D-dimer test results: Negative results mean that you don’t have any  abnormal clotting problem. Medical evaluation of people with clotting risk will be more easier with negative/normal d-dimer test  result.  It can be understood that the symptoms are not related with a clotting problem.

    Positive D-dimer test results: Positive results mean that clot degradation products level is high. This signs there is a problem in clotting and break down of clotting in the body.

    High D-dimer test result may be caused by;

    • Old age; being older than 80
    • Pregnancy
    • Smoking
    • Severe infection
    • Trauma
    • Liver disease
    • Heart attack
    • Inflammatory disorder
    • Recent surgery
    • Cancer
    • Sepsis
    • Renal disease
    • Stroke
    • High triglyceride level
