Fibrin degradation products (FDP) Test

FDP test is named from the words fibrin degradation products, which is done to determine the  substances that are occured when the clot dissolves in the blood.

What are fibrin degradation products?

In normal conditions blood doesn’t clot in the vessels but if a clot occurs because of any reason, body activates the systems to  dissolve and remove this clot. Otherwise clot obstructs the vessel and cut off the blood flow to the organs so organs can’t take enough oxygen and food. Preventing and dissolving clots inside of the vessels have vital importance for the body. These products after dissolving of the clots are named “fibrin degradation products”.

Why/when the FDP test is done?fdp test

Determination of deep vein thrombosis

Monitoring clotting disorders

Determination of pulmonary embolism

Monitoring the patients who take treatment for clotting problems

In kidney disease

If patient has leukemia

Factors that may affect FDP (fibrin degradation products) test

Some medicines like heparin, streptokinase, barbiturates, urokinase may increase your FDP test result so your doctor may request to stop using these medicines before the test. Please don’t stop using your medicines without consulting your doctor.

Causes of clotting disorder

Liver disease

Kidney disease

Congenital heart disease

Hypertension in pregnancy

Normal value of FDP (fibrin degradation products) test

Normal range may change according to the laboratory, test method and the analyser.

FDP test normal value: Less than 10 mcg

Higher value may mean a clotting disorder

High FDP (fibrin degradation products) causes

  • DIC (disseminated intravascular coagulation)
  • Burns
  • Congenital heart disease
  • Leukemia
  • Low blood oxygen level
  • Liver disease
  • Pulmonary embolism
  • Sepsis
  • Shock
  • Kidney disease
  • Transplant and transfusion rejection
  • Deep venous thrombosis
  • Little increasing with exercise, stres, anxiety
