Preparation for fasting blood sugar test
As you can understand from the fasting blood sugar test name you should not eat anything for a certain time before the test. At least 8-12 hours of fasting is needed. Morning blood collection is preferred so you can stop eating after 8:00-10:00 pm and you can give blood at morning. You can drink only water during this period; other foods and drinks like soda, milk, alcohol etc may affect your fasting blood sugar test result.

Commonly a tube of blood which is collected from an arm vein will be suitable for fasting blood sugar test. Blood may be collected from a vein on of your arm inside of your elbow or on the back of your hand. Blood tube is centrifuged and plasma or serum is collected according to the tube type. Fasting blood sugar test can be done in both plasma or serum.

- Wash your hands and dry before starting your home blood glucose test
- Insert a test strip into the blood glucose meter
- You should prick your fingertip with a sterile sharp needle or a sterile lancet

- You can have your blood sugar result within 15-20 seconds

Fasting blood sugar level should be betweeen 70-100 mg/dL in healthy people. The results higher or lower from this range may be a sign of a problem and should be examined to find the cause.
